Custom Packing & Shipping Since 1995
Pak Mail Santa Fe builds custom wood crates on site at our shop on Montezuma Ave, just off the Plaza. Every crate is designed around one specific item, measured to its dimensions and built to its fragility profile. Nothing gets pulled off a stack of standard sizes.
Custom crating is what you need when a box and padding will not do the job: high-value pieces, fragile items, awkward shapes that fight rectangular packaging, and heavy items needing real structural support.
It is also the line between a pack-and-ship specialist and a shipping counter. Drop-off locations accept items you have already boxed. We build the container around the item instead.
A lot of our crating work starts the same way. Someone buys a painting on Canyon Road or finds a piece at an estate sale, then realizes it will not fit in the car. For items too large or too fragile to move safely, we offer pickup throughout the Santa Fe metro area. Once we build the crate, we match it to the right carrier, including UPS, FedEx, DHL, and freight carriers such as Estes.

Key Takeaway: Pak Mail Santa Fe builds custom crates for items of any size, weight, or shape, from a single gallery painting to an entire estate of antique furniture.
Most of what comes through the shop falls into a handful of categories:
If your item is not on that list, it probably still qualifies. The categories that matter are value, fragility, weight, and shape, not what the object happens to be. Art crating, bronze shipping, and furniture crating each call for different internal construction, and our art shipping work in particular has its own requirements for surface contact and climate.
Every crating job runs through the same five steps, though the crate itself is different every time.
Key Takeaway: If an item is irreplaceable, oddly shaped, heavier than about 70 pounds, or worth more than you would be comfortable losing, custom crating is the right call. Standard packing handles most everyday shipments.
Custom crating earns its cost on a specific set of items: high-value pieces such as art, antiques, and heirlooms, extremely fragile ones like glass and instruments, oversized or heavy items, irregular shapes no box will hold, and anything crossing a border where treated wood packaging is required.
Standard packing is usually the better answer when an item fits in a box with room for cushioning, is not especially fragile or valuable, and falls within normal parcel weight limits. You can see the full range of methods on our packing and shipping services page.
There is a middle option. Blanket wrapping, also called pad wrapping, protects surfaces and edges without a rigid enclosure, which suits furniture moving by freight where the piece is sturdy but the finish is not. We will tell you which of the three your item needs.
One note on international shipments. Wood packaging crossing most borders must be treated and marked under ISPM 15, most commonly by heat treatment. This is an industry requirement, not specific to us. Requirements vary by destination country, and USDA APHIS publishes the current rules.
Crating is priced per job, because no two crates are the same. Size drives most of it, since a larger crate takes more plywood, more lumber, and more labor. Irregular shapes add engineering time for blocking and bracing. Weight affects both materials and the freight class the crate ships under. International shipments need ISPM-15 compliant wood, which costs more than untreated lumber. We provide free estimates, and photos with rough measurements are usually enough to get you a number. Anything high-value, extremely fragile, oversized, heavy, or shaped so awkwardly that no box will hold it safely. A framed oil painting, a marble sculpture, a grandfather clock, and a glass display case all qualify, for different reasons in each case. Value matters as much as fragility, since a sturdy object can still be irreplaceable. Not sure whether your item needs a crate? Bring it in or send photos. Sometimes a custom crate is the answer and sometimes blanket wrapping will do, and we will tell you which.
Yes. International shipments require a wooden crate for shipping that meets ISPM 15, the phytosanitary standard requiring wood packaging to be heat-treated and marked so it cannot carry pests across borders. We build to that standard using treated and marked lumber and handle the documentation that travels with the crate itself. Compliance is a normal part of export crating rather than a premium add-on. USDA APHIS details the treatment standards.
Yes, anywhere in the Santa Fe metro area. We collect from homes, businesses, galleries, and event venues, which matters most for pieces too large, too heavy, or too fragile to move without professional handling. Pickup gets scheduled when you request your quote, so mention it when you call or submit the form, along with stairs or narrow doorways.
