The World Renowned International Folk Art Market

July 9, 2020 by shipsafe

For 15 years, the Santa Fe International Folk Art Market, the largest of its kind in the world, has showcased works by more than 1,000 folk artists from 100 countries around the globe. Begun in 2004 as a small grassroots organization in Santa Fe featuring works by 60 artists, the International Folk Art Market has grown from a one-weekend event into a year-round nonprofit.Pelican Statue Santa Fe Art Market

The market’s mission is dedicated “to create economic opportunities for and with folk artists worldwide who celebrate and preserve folk art traditions,” and its vision is a “world that values the dignity” of handmade art and that “honors timeless cultural traditions.”

Founded by Thomas Aageson, executive director of the Museum of New Mexico Foundation and former director of the Aid to Artisans; Charlene Cerny, former director of Santa Fe’s Museum of International Folk Art; businesswoman Judith Espinar and philanthropist Charmay Allred, the International Folk Art Market seeks to unite the world’s people through the international exchange of folk art.

An early sponsor of the Santa Fe International Folk Art Market, the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization, or UNESCO, funded 10 artists during the organization’s infancy and in 2007 began honoring the market’s products with its Award of Excellence.

More recently, the July event has resulted in $3 million worth of folk art purchases, much of which has returned to the artists’ native countries and, in turn, to their communities where it has gone toward construction of schools and vital infrastructure.

Diverse countries in Asia, Africa, Europe, the Near East and the Western Hemisphere are all represented at the Santa Fe International Folk Art Market. Since many of the works are from developing countries where the artisan sector is an important industry, there’s much potential for folk artists to make a positive impact in their home communities.

Unlike fine art, folk art represents traditional cultures and conveys community values. Most works of folk art are utilitarian, as opposed to being decorative, which is characteristic of other art forms.

In other words, folk artwork originally served a practical purpose and was duplicated over time to meet the needs of future generations. Another characteristic of folk art is that it’s created only one piece at a time and is never produced in large quantities or on an assembly line.

Most folk artists learn their craft informally within their communities, rather than through formal education, and represent the entire community’s culture, as opposed to that of the individual artist’s personal identity. Folk artists generally use such commonplace media as paper, clay, cloth, wood and metal.

Santa Fe Indian Market

July 8, 2020 by shipsafe

There is no place on earth like the Santa Fe Indian Market. Held in the third week of August and produced by the Southwestern Association for the Indian Arts (SWAIA), the Market attracts 100,000 visitors each year to downtown Santa Fe, New Mexico.Santa Fe Indian Market sellers on Santa Fe Plaza

The Market grew out of the Indian Fair created by the Museum of New Mexico as part of the Santa Fe Fiesta celebration. Originally produced as a way to keep the cultural heritage of the tribes alive, the Indian Market has grown to be a tremendous opportunity for thousands of people from around the world to experience the rich artistic culture of the southwest tribes.

One of the reasons for its success is the Market’s longevity. The inaugural Market took place in 1922, which means the event is almost 100 years old. Held on the historic Santa Fe Plaza, the Market boasts upwards of 1,000 vendors each year.

Artists from over 200 tribes are represented, and they bring their works of art to Santa Fe to sell directly to buyers. Being able to meet the artists and buy from them is one of the biggest draws of the Indian Market.

Buyers have the opportunity to experience the result of hundreds of years of tradition handcrafted into each piece at the market. There is nothing quite as special as being meeting the original artist of the piece you are buying. The Indian Market makes this experience possible for each visitor.

The Market is the largest juried Native arts show in the world and includes an awards ceremony and Live Auction Gala. Additional events during the market include a Native American clothing contest, Native Cinema Showcase, and Native Root and Rhythms, featuring performances of music, dance, storytelling, and comedy.

The Indian Market is a way for everyone to experience and enjoy some of the best parts of Native American life. The market has grown in size almost every year it’s been held.

The longevity of the event and the quality of the art available here are nothing short of spectacular. Many of the 100,000 annual visitors to the Market come for the food and to rub elbows with master artists and craftspeople. No vehicle traffic is allowed in the plaza during the Market, and that means every stall and every booth affords an up close and personal experience for the visitors.

The food here is extraordinary. Navajo tacos, fry bread with an astounding variety of toppings, roasted corn still in the husks, roasted green chilies, and a plentiful array of sweets are available at every corner of the Market.

The sights, the sounds, the smells, and the flavors of the Santa Fe Indian Market draw repeat visitors every year. Over and over again, visitors extol the virtues of being able to meet and talk with the original artists of the work available. Experienced repeat visitors know the importance of booking accommodations ahead of time. They also know that one day is not nearly enough to enjoy the full experience of the Indian Market.

Come for the unique experience of the artwork, stay for the food and the festivities. Just make sure to plan your summer around the third week in August to enjoy the Santa Fe Indian Market in all its majesty and excitement. This is an experience you will never forget.

PakMail Santa Fe is an official shipping vendor for Indian Market. Whether you need to ship your wares to the event or send home your purchases, we can pack and ship them with no hassle.

Santa Fe Art Week in July

June 21, 2020 by shipsafe

This summer Santa Fe will host the first-ever Santa Fe Art Week from July 12 through July 21, 2019. Santa Fe, surrounded by the glowing colors of desert and sky, is art itself. The soft lines of the city’s 400-year old adobe buildings along with the temperate summer climate make this town the destination for the Summer of 2019.

Santa Fe Art Week in July is a 10-day exhibition of world-class art which features abundant galleries and conversations with their artists. Your walking tour allows you to experience the eclectic co-mingling of museums, boutiques, and restaurants on a personal level. Each gallery doorway you step through brings you into yet another world of color, mood, and expression. You will be amazed and transformed.

Santa Fe artists are diverse. Some are long-time residents who tap into their talent later in life. Young and contemporary artists relocate to Santa Fe from larger urban areas and are nourished by strong community support while they explore their craft.

Finished art pieces are endlessly diverse in color and texture. Inspiration drawn from the New Mexico landscape is clearly manifested in oil and watercolor, whether in bright splashes or subtle whispers. Sculptures appear to rise out of nearby desert topography. Many artists travel, therefore, influence from international architecture and other geographies become evident. The portrayal of natural and urban landscapes, in abstraction or realism, abound.

One hometown offering is the spectacular kinetic sculptures created by Mark White in his 1700s adobe gallery. Just add a soft desert breeze, and the fluid motion becomes entrancing to the eye and nourishing to the soul. You are the interpreter, see whatever you like!

There are many live demonstrations and interactive art classes to attend. With over 100 scheduled events, your week will be filled with surprise, education, and cultural richness.

As the week progresses, the Art Santa Fe Opening Night Preview Party will be held Friday, July 18 at the modern Santa Fe Community Convention Center.

Art Santa Fe is celebrating 19 successful years this summer of bringing together local, state and worldwide talent. For attendees who simply appreciate beauty and want to take home a treasure, you will be welcomed and delighted. On display will be stunning original paintings, sculptures, photography, and glassworks.

The Santa Fe Community Convention Center is a magnificent structure carefully designed to incorporate tradition and history with efficiency and functionality. Completed in 2008, city planners carefully preserved Navajo and Spanish accents and local artisans contributed complementing final touches. The Convention Center creates the perfect ambiance congruent with the art you are viewing.

Compared to the concrete and steel sameness of many other urban areas, the kaleidoscope of color and light offered by Santa Fe may shift you into sensory overload– in the best possible way. Plan your vacation at the Santa Fe Art Week in July and collect your takeaway memories from the City Different!

And when you are done shopping for art at the end of the week, don’t forget to call PakMail for all of your art shipping needs.

Spanish Market in Santa Fe 2019

April 17, 2020 by shipsafe

Every summer for almost seven decades, the Traditional Spanish Market has taken place in Santa Fe.

Hosted by The Spanish Colonial Arts Society, will take place on the historic Santa Fe Plaza on July 27th and 28th.

During the 68th Annual Market, around 250 Spanish Colonial artists from throughout New Mexico and Southern Colorado will gather together for the magical event, bringing their beautiful woodcarving, tinwork, colcha, furniture, weavings, jewelry, pottery and much more.

For people who live locally and purchase a larger work of art, they may be able to get it back to their home if they own a minivan or SUV, or they may have to rent a truck to get the handmade piece to their house.

But for those who have purchased a large painting, item of furniture, home furnishing or other unique artwork as a gift for a loved one in another state, they may be wondering how they can get the item to them—safe and sound and in one piece.

The same is true for the hundreds of tourists who come in from around the country for the Traditional Spanish Market. While they may be able to fit handmade jewelry or a small weaving into their luggage, they will probably not be able to fly the friendly skies with a large and heavy hand-wrought piece of ironwork.

Instead, we will be happy to come to pick it up, and then use our innovative software to determine the best packing option based on the size, value, fragility, and destination of the work of art.
