How to Decide What to Get Rid Of Before Moving
You know what we think is the best part about moving?
It allows us to get rid of a lot of unwanted stuff that otherwise only clutters our living spaces.
You obviously don’t want to carry unnecessary clutter into your new home. However, when it comes to deciding on what to take and what not to take – things get complicated. We habitually attach sentimental values or that “I might just need it in the future”-tag with things that we don’t want to let go off. And most often, these are the same things that we don’t need in our lives – we don’t use them anymore.
So, how do you figure out what to get rid of before moving? Here’s a guide to help you with that:
Do the Drill
Tackle one room at a time. Sort through things and ask yourself the “important questions for moving”:
Do I really need this thing?
Have I used it in the past 6 months?
Will I need it in the next 6 months?
Is it in working condition?
Anything that doesn’t answer YES to all of the questions above can be left behind without any guilt. Everything else, you take along with you.
Get Them Sorted
We know it’s not easy to part with certain things. Just to help you get over the pain of parting with things that you have sentimental attachments with – think of better ways to let go of them – donate or sell them. Imagine all those clothes you don’t wear anymore can keep someone adequately covered during winters. Plus, those kitchen appliances you barely use can bring in some good money.
The Things You Forgot Existed
When you’re packing and cleaning a home before moving, you come across a number of things that make you go “Oh, I completely forgot I had this too!”
Rule of thumb: If you don’t remember it, you don’t need it. Get rid of it as soon as you can.
Now there’s an exception to this rule. This might be an item that you misplaced at some point in time and genuinely lamented over it for a very long time. If it was THAT dear to you, you get a pass to keep it. Otherwise, just toss it into one of the sorted piles.
Then, there are certain things that you should get rid of without even thinking twice about it. These things may include:
Clothes that don’t make you feel good and confident
The unwanted media – those DVDs, Blu-Rays, CDs, Video Games, and even books that are only taking up space. Sell them off for extra bucks.
Furniture too big or too small for your new home. You don’t want your new home looking like a cluttered mess.
Your old towels – get rid of them – you can get new ones.
All those tacky “free” gifts you got from promotional offers don’t belong in your new home.
Outdated electronics are a big YES for the “Throw Away” pile!
Cracked, mismatched china should be left behind too.
Donate the toys and stuffed animals; they’re for kids anyway.
